The Tupamaros were an urban guerrilla organisation borne out of the social and economic inequalities that existed in the small South American nation of Uruguay in the late 1960s. Their practises were at times humorous and at others murderous. They high jacked trucks full of food and drove them to poor neighbourhoods for distribution, they stole police uniforms and used them to rob banks and they were responsible for numerous bombings. In 1970 they blew up a social club in the well to do suburb of Carrasco in Montevideo. On a wall nearby they painted the warning, “O bailan todos, o no baila nadie.” (Everyone dances or nobody dances).
